A great location, just to the west of the main airport, in the south, and 15 minutes from the main tourist resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. Set in a dedicated golf resort, it looks out onto the Atlantic and a popular walking path skirts along the edge so non players can also appreciate the amazing views.
Donald Steel designed the course in 1989 and made sure he used the natural features to their best advantage. A prime example of that is the 5th hole where you have to drive the ball across the sea as it cuts into the cliff side. In 1990, Amarilla hosted the Tenerife Open, part of the European PGA Tour.
All along the 6077 metre course, you will notice a large range of trees and shrubs that attract birds and small animals, this is quite a nature reserve. Setting out, the first five holes hug the coast, before moving inland and a chance to admire the mountain ranges topped by the snow capped Mount Teide. At the 12th hole you will dip down to the sea again and feel the breeze cooling you. The final three holes are a stern test as you need to avoid the large dark sand bunkers before finishing and enjoying a drink or a meal.
If you want to warm up for your game, try the driving range or 9 hole pitch and putt. Other facilities include tennis courts, swimming pool, bar and restaurant, and here’s one that most golf courses can’t boast, an questrian centre. Prices are 75 euros for 18 holes or 45 euros for nine, buggies are just 30€ or 21€, and club hire is 15 euros.
